CHOICE PROGRAM
Electricity and natural gas choice programs allow residential and commercial users to select a supplier other than the traditional utility.

COMMODITY COST
The cost of commodity (natural gas or electricity) and related charges to deliver it to the marketplace.

DEREGULATION
Removal or relaxation of regulations or controls governing a business or service operation such as utilities. This allows for retail rate competition as opposed to monopoly.

DISTRIBUTION
The delivery of electricity to an end-user through low-voltage lines or natural gas through pipeline systems.

END-USER
A retail customer of a natural gas or electricity product or service.

ELECTRIC GENERATION SUPPLIER (EGS)
An energy supplier that provides gas or electric service.

ENERGY SERVICE COMPANY (ESCO)
An energy supplier that provides gas or electric service.

GENERATION
A process which produces electricity.

GRID
A system of power lines and generators coordinated to deliver electricity to
customers at various points.

KILOWATT HOUR (KWH)
The unit of electric energy for which customers are charged. It is also what determines your electricity usage. kWh has the largest effect on your bill amount.

LOAD FORECAST
An estimate of the level of future energy needs.

LOCAL DISTRIBUTION COMPANY (LDC)
The utility company that provides the distribution, customer and energy services for natural gas.

OFF-PEAK
A period of time when there is a low demand for electricity on a utility's generation system.

ON-PEAK
A period of time when there is a high demand for electricity on a utility's generation system.

RENEWABLE RESOURCE (RENEWABLE)
An energy source that provides an alternative to oil, gas or coal for the generation of electricity.

STORAGE
The placement of utility-owned gas in underground facilities during the summer, when demand is low, that is withdrawn for the winter when gas consumption is higher.

TARIFF
A document that lists the rates, terms and conditions of a local distribution company's services that are subject to review and approval by the New York State Public Service Commission.

THERM
The basic unit for measuring natural gas use.

TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION SERVICE PROVIDER (TDSP)
The utility that owns or operates the equipment or facilities that transmit or distributes electricity to your location. The TDSP is also responsible for reading your meter and setting prices related to your Disconnect Fee and Distribution Company Charges
